By the early 1800s nearly 10,000 were employed in knitwear and hosiery in the Hinckley area. The town saw the testing in 1834 of Britain’s first Hansom cab, which was a light, fast, two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage very popular with the Victorians. In the 1840s Hinckley attempted (unsuccessfully) to rebrand itself as a spa town to rival Cheltenham and Bath. Dick Turpin, the notorious highwayman, used the Cock Inn at Sibston as a hideaway, although normally he lived at home with his mum near Shenton. In 2007 Hinckley resident Tony Alleyne, sold his one bed flat, which he had transformed into an exact replica of the Star Trek Voyager’s flight deck, for an astronomical £425,000.
