Although heavily developed following World War II and considered a ‘new town’, Hemel Hempstead has existed since the 8th century. Hemel Hempstead is to be found resting at the bottom of a chalkland valley where two rivers meet, the River Gade and the River Bulbourne. To the north and west are some lush woodland and the beautiful Chiltern Hills. Hemel Hempstead has become famous for its notoriously and seemingly illogical roundabouts that end up confusing many a new driver. Perhaps a philosopher and essayist like Sir Francis Bacon, who lived in the nearby manor of Gorehambury from 1601, would have come up with a better design.
