Built after the Second World War to help ease the strain on an overcrowded London, Harlow was one of the post-war “new towns” within striking distance of the capital. Designed by architect Frederick Gibberd it was the first town in Britain to have a pedestrian precinct and the first to have a tower block - it’s a striking vote of confidence in the town’s design that Gibberd chose to live here too. Although it only recently celebrated its 60th birthday, Harlow has its roots back much further than that: “Old Harlow” is thought to be one of the oldest settlements in England with archaeological evidence suggesting that people lived here as early as 6000BC!
