Today Halesowen is home to about 58,000 people but 700 years ago, experts reckon, only 300 people lived here. When the area was transformed during the Industrial Revolution, Halesowen became a centre for the manufacture of nails – the guys who supplied the nailers with iron were called ‘foggers’. Famous people with a link to Halesowen include footballer Lee Sharpe, born here in 1971, and comedian Frank Skinner, who was an English lecturer at Halesowen College in the 1980s. Halesowen was in the news a few months ago when a huge orange, triangular-shaped UFO was sighted by a number of people over the town.
