Between Benfleet and Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, Hadleigh is a small town best known for its 13th century ragstone and cement castle and the beautiful country park which surrounds it. The castle, immortalised by English painter John Constable in his Tate-hung painting, was built in the reign of King John for the 1st Earl of Kent, Hubert de Burgh. Unfortunately years of neglect have taken their toll but two towers, constructed during the residency of King Edward III in the 14th century, still remain. Activities take place on the grounds throughout the year, including the summer glow worm hunt. Recently a reproduction Iron Age roundhouse has been built and visitors can take part in a mock archaeological dig.
