Guildford is a Surrey town with strong Saxon roots that rests in a clearing on the North Downs where the ancient track known as Harrow Way fords the River Wey. In Sir Thomas Mallory’s epic Le Morte d’Arthur, Guildford is equated with the legendary Arthurian city ‘Astolat’ also known as ‘Shallot’ (as in Lord Tennyson’s Victorian poem The Lady of Shallot. Guildford has always been an important English town and in 978AD it became the Royal Mint. Nearby is the historic Pilgrim’s Way, a route that was taken by pilgrims travelling from Winchester to the shrine of Thomas Beckett in Canterbury. Unfortunately William the Conqueror on his return from the Battle of Hastings also used this ‘way’ and sacked the town as he passed.
