Gravesend is an important historic town on the banks of the River Thames in Kent. Its importance lies in its location on the Thames near the Thames Gateway. Gravesend also has one of England’s longest running markets dating from the early 13th century. In the past travel by road to the town was extremely hazardous, as stagecoaches would have to pass over the windswept Blackheath where notorious highwaymen would lurk in every shadow. Gravesend also has the world’s oldest surviving cast iron pier, which was built in 1834. The Native American beauty Pocahontas fell in love and married Englishman John Rolfe and was buried at Gravesend.
