Halfway between Edinburgh and Dundee is the town of Glenrothes. It is Scotland's second 'new town' and is the largest in the Fife area. Nearby is the now closed Rothes Colliery, which was established in 1948 and attracted many workers and their families to the area. Following the closure of the pit, the area has more recently been thriving once again thanks to the electronics industry that has given the area its nickname of 'Silicon Glen'. Like its American counterpart, Silicon Valley, Silicon Glen is involved in the design, development and manufacture of semi-conductors, and consequently many hi-tech companies are present in the area including IBM, Microsoft and Motorola.
