The name Glemgormley means ‘the blue grey glen’ from the Irish Gleann gorm liath. Within walking distance of the village is Belfast Zoo, otherwise known as Bellevue Zoo. It has over 1,200 animals and 160 species and, as part of its membership of a successful European breeding programme, has celebrated 28 giraffe births in 12 years. A Barbary Lion Cub and Malayan Tapir have also been born here. The Zoo was originally opened in 1911 as a public park called Bellevue Pleasure Gardens. The gardens were then redeveloped as a Zoo in 1933 attracting over 280,000 visitors per year.
