Govan is at the south western point of the city of Glasgow, on the south bank of the Clyde and opposite the mouth of the wildlife-rich River Kelvin. In the 6th century martyred King Constantine of Cornwall, who is now often regarded as a saint, founded a monastery here. Although in the 18th and 19th century Govan's primary industries were those of weaving and mining, later it developed a significant shipbuilding industry. It wasn't until 1912 that it was finally absorbed officially into Glasgow. Prime Minister Gordon Prime was brought up in Govan and Tony Blair's father, Leo Blair, was also raised here. Comedian Billy Connolly was born here.
