At one end of the North Downs walkway and amongst the breathtaking Surrey hills is the historic town of Farnham. There have been settlers here since the Stone Age, some 400,000 years ago, although it was the Saxons that gave the town the origins of its name. One thing that most people don’t know is that William Willet was born in Farnham in 1856. William Willet was the inventor of Daylight Saving (or rather the re-inventor as this method of time-keeping was common with the ancients). Unfortunately at the time most people thought that the idea of Daylight Saving was eccentric and he never lived to see his idea put into use.
