The beautiful county town of Ennis is on the banks of the River Fergus, to the north of Limerick. The name comes from the original Irish 'Inis Cluain Ramh Fhada' meaning 'Long Rowing Meadow Island'. The town grew around a Franciscan Friary and was also an historic market town. Every year, towards the end of May, the town hosts an important music festival, called the 'Fleadh Nua', which is dedicated to traditional Irish music; it is the second largest festival of its type in Ireland. The town is also the home of the Glor Irish Music Centre, which holds many concerts, comedy acts and plays throughout the year. Muhammad Ali's great grandfather, Abe Grady, came from the area.
