Egham is a small town upon the River Thames in the Runnymede Borough of Surrey. The English charter known as the Magna Carta, or ‘Great Paper’, was sealed in nearby Runnymede in 1215, and, amongst other things, grants citizens the right of ‘habeas corpus’, or the chance to appeal against wrongful imprisonment. One of Egham’s obtuse past residents said in his will that he did not want to be buried nor remain above ground; he is still ‘hanging around’ as his coffin is in the local graveyard suspended on a chain. Frederick James Furnivall was born here in 1825 and went on to be one of the two people who created the first Oxford English Dictionary.
