Until the early 19th century, there was a riding school on Nicolson Street but the land where the school was situated was purchased to house what is now Edinburgh's Royal College of Surgeons. The College has existed in the area for over 500 years. Architect William Henry Playfair (1790 – 1857) was commissioned to design the new college building, complete with meeting halls, a library, a lecture room and a museum. Playfair also designed the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy, both fine examples of neo-classical architecture. On the corner of Nicolson Street and Drummond Street there used to be a café in which J K Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter novel.
