To the south of Edinburgh's bustling city centre is the suburb of Colinton. Colinton itself dates back to the 11th century and grew around a popular ford on the Water of Leith. Nearby is the 15th century Colinton Castle, which was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell during his invasion of Scotland. Strangely the castle was repaired but then partly destroyed again by Scottish portrait and landscape painter Alexander Nasmyth, in order to create a 'picturesque ruin'. Mid-19th century novelist, poet and travel writer Robert Louis Stevenson (famous for The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Treasure Island) was a big fan of the village and visited repeatedly throughout his life.
