On high ground on the south side of Cathkin Braes, and to the south of Glasgow, is Scotland's first 'new town', East Kilbride. To the east of the town is the Rotten Calder river which runs northward to join the River Clyde. It is considered to be Scotland's largest town, although another competitor for the same title is the town Paisley in the central lowlands. Although 'new' the town has its origins in Scotland's Celtic past. The local church was built on the site of a well sacred to the Celtic goddess, Christianised as St Brigid. Also the oystercatcher bird, sacred to this goddess, appears on local families' coat of arms. Funnily enough the well was until recently situated under an off-licence.
