To the north of the Weald and Ashdown Forest lies the town of East Grinstead on the Greenwich Meridian line. Near the centre of town is the Sackville College, a 17th century sandstone almshouse, where John Mason Neale first wrote down the famous Christmas carol, ‘Good King Wenceslas’. There are also some beautiful 14th century timber- framed houses to be found on the High Street. Author Neil Gaiman, who wrote the movies ‘Stardust’ and ‘Beowulf’, was born here as were the singer songwriters Right Said Fred. The ever- popular adventures of the bear, Winnie the Pooh, created by A A Milne in the 1920s, were based here in Ashdown Forrest.
