Durham is famous for its beautiful, ancient Cathedral and Castle. Sitting on the River Wear, the Cathedral is thought to have been founded in 1093 AD and is regarded as one of the finest Cathedrals in Europe. In 1650, it was used as a prison by Oliver Cromwell to hold Scottish prisoners of war. Much of the building and grounds have since been used as sets in films such as Elizabeth and the Harry Potter films. It was also selected as a favourite choice in 2002’s Britain’s Best Buildings on the BBC.
