Known as 'Queen of the South', Dumfries is part of the Dumfries and Galloway district. It was here at Greyfriar Kirk that Robert the Bruce defeated his enemy Red Comyn before going on to become King of Scotland. Poet Robert Burns spent the last years of his life here and there is a statue of him outside of Greyfriars Church. Nearby is the small but popular town Gretna Green, which has become famous for illicit marriages. These secretive unions were commonly made in the town's Blacksmith's Shop. Although Scottish law did allow for these rapid marriages things have changed and now you have to be a resident of the town for at least 21 days. Despite this 1 in every 6 Scottish weddings is thought to take place in Gretna.
