Dublin’s Irish name is 'Baile Átha Cliath' which roughly translates as 'The Settlement of the Ford of the Reed Hurdles'. The name “Dublin” itself comes from the phrase “Dubh Linn” meaning “black pool”. Dublin's oldest workhouse closed its doors for the last time in July 1969. Based in Smithfield, the premises housed over 10,000 orphan children during the 170 years it operated. Economic growth has been extraordinary in the city in recent years, resulting in a huge transformation of the city centre with new developments such as Dublin Docklands and U2 Tower, which will be the tallest building in Ireland on completion.
