The town of Doncaster in South Yorkshire is probably most famous for its horse racing. The town became part of the stagecoach trade in the 16th Century, which led to a major increase in horse breeding. The Doncaster Cup is the oldest horserace in the world together with the St. Ledger Stakes, which remains the oldest classic horse race. Doncaster also had its hand in the industrial revolution with production of such famous steam trains as The Flying Scotsman and Mallard from the Great Northern Railways Locomotive and Carriage Building Works.
