Created in 1956, Cumbernauld is one of Scotland’s new towns. Despite this it has a large population and is Scotland's 7th largest urban area, making it bigger than two of Scotland's cities, Inverness and Stirling. The name Cumbernauld comes from the Gaelic 'comar nan allt', which means 'the meeting of the waters'. The waters that the name refers to are nearby streams that flow into the Clyde and the River Forth. Although the town is new, there was a castle here that had many royal visitors including Mary Queen of Scots. Unfortunately during Mary's visit the roof of the great hall collapsed killing many of the guests. Cumbernauld has earned the nickname 'the windy town', as it is sits on one of lowland Scotland's highest hills.
