Daring flying ace Biggles put Cramlington on the map when his creator W. E. Johns wrote about Cramlington’s airfield in The Black Peril. These days Cramlington is keen to get you on your bike: there is a large cycle path network that connects the town to Blyth beach and the local nature reserve among the sand dunes. If you prefer balmy breezes to bracing sea air then Cramlington’s Concordia Leisure Centre has a tropical paradise-style indoor pool as well as indoor football pitches and a climbing wall. Notable locals include footballer Alan Shearer, who started his career playing for Cramlington Juniors F.C. and Sting who briefly taught at St Paul's First School before he shot to fame in The Police.
