Washington Street is one of the main streets in the City of Cork. It was built in 1824 and was originally named ‘St George’s Street’ but the people of Cork renamed it in 1918. Cork City itself is the second largest City in the Republic of Ireland. The River Lee flows through it and then out into Cork Harbour, the second largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney. One of Ireland’s major seaports, it features many notable buildings such as Shandon Steeple, St Finbarre’s Cathedral and the City Hall, which is illuminated spectacularly at night.
