Douglas, is a suburb about 4km away from the centre of Cork, Ireland’s second city and the capital of Munster. Its Irish name is Dúglas, which means ‘Dark Stream’ and a stream still flows through the area, eventually reaching Cork Harbour. The village was founded in the 18th Century and was home to two regionally important textile mills that were introduced by Huguenot refugees. The Huguenots were part of the protestant church of France, and were widely persecuted in their native country for their religious beliefs, causing many of them to flee abroad.
