Even though the area around Corby was well-known to the Romans as a source of good iron ore, amazingly Corby was still a village with a population of only 1,500 in 1931. The local ironstone works was taken over by Stewarts and Lloyds and by 1939 the town had grown to around 12,000 people thanks to the steelworks. These works were nationalised in 1967, but just twelve years later iron and steel making in the town ended. Today Corby is experiencing a new wave of investment. There’s Willow Place, offering a great shopping experience, and soon the Parkland Gateway, which will see loads of new spaces for residents to enjoy, including an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
