The town of Cheshunt is well known for a variety of reasons. In 1712, the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth, Richard Cromwell, died here. More recently Cliff Richard lived here and attended the local secondary school. Until the 1960’s, most of the surrounding land was used for greenhouses and many groundbreaking techniques for growing under glass were developed here. It is now a largely modern town with many excellent facilities but it still has a historic core with several buildings of historic interest including the Dewhurst Charity School, which dates from 1640.
