Chalfont St Peter is one of the largest villages in the country and was first mentioned in the seventh century as 'Caedeles Funta', meaning Caedele’s Spring as it was situated on a spring by the River Misbourne. This Anglo Saxon settlement covered three separate villages but no distinction was made between them at the time. The villages apparently separated in the 1200’s and Chalfont St Peter took its name from the dedication of the church in the village. Nowadays, this beautiful village is often described as being the ‘Gateway to the Chiltern Hills’ and has become an increasingly popular place to live with commuters.
