Caterham used to be called Caterham-on-the-Hill because the original settlement was on the ridge above the modern town. The Normans built St Lawrence's Church here in 1095. The modern town in the valley is a product of the Victorian age and the coming of the Caterham railway line in 1856. Caterham prospered as rich merchants, wanting to escape the dirty London air, started to build mansions along the Harestone Valley Road. Today the town has many shops and the new 'Church Walk' pedestrian precinct lies just across 'Grand Parade' from the station. Caterham is the home of the sports car of the same name - the showroom is just a few steps from the station.
