The Irish inland town of Carlow sits on the River Barrow. The area has been settled for thousands of years and this is reflected in the plethora of historical buildings and ruins in or near the town. A monastery called St Mullins was established around 7th century and Carlow Castle, thought to be one of the most impressive Norman castles in Ireland, was built between 1207 and 1213 by William Marshal. Though not much survives of the castle it is currently at the centre of a major urban renewal programme.
