Carlisle has had a stormy history. William Rufus son of William the Conqueror drove the Scots out of Carlisle in 1092 to claim it for England. Over the next 700 years Carlisle changed hands many times. This eternal squabbling invoked the famous ‘Curse of Carlisle’ from Archbishop Dunbar of Glasgow in 1525 against the Border Reivers who terrorised the locals. You’ll find an inscription of the curse on the ‘Bishop’s Stone’ in the Millennium Subway, where it sits on a granite pavement inscribed with the names of the Border Reiver families. This subway links Carlisle Castle with the Jacobean Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery.
