Apparently the name Cannock comes from the Celtic word ‘cnoc’, meaning hill. Although coal has been mined here from at least the 13th Century, it was the mining boom of the Victorian period that really put Cannock on the map. The town then continued to grow rapidly with many industries coming to the area. After the Second World War the town's population again increased and it has kept on increasing to today’s population of about 92,500 people. Cannock has the best of both worlds: you can enjoy the peacefulness of Cannock Chase on the doorstep or take part in some great leisure activities, such as skating at the Silver Blades Ice Rink.
