Lying on the River Irwell, this Lancashire mill town grew up around its ancient market place. It has some impressive historic connections: Sir Robert Peel, Prime Minister and founder of the Metropolitan Police Service was born in Ramsbottom, Bury in 1788. The rather austere Peel Tower is perched on Harcles Hill and you’ll find his statue outside Bury parish church. Other Bury notables include Cherie Blair, Just William creator Richmal Crompton and a young Bury Grammar School girl called Victoria Wood who may well have visited the Bury Art Gallery and Museum on Moss Street to look at their fine collection of works by Turner, Constable and Lowry.
