Brentwood was originally known as Burnt Wood after a fire cleared an opening in the middle of the forest and pilgrims en route to Canterbury began to settle there. Slowly a settlement grew and in 1227 a market charter was granted. Nowadays Brentwood is a busy town with many businesses, shops and the well-known Brentwood Centre. It has a lively reputation with music, exhibitions and other events regularly held there. Brentwood School is another well-known addition to the town. Founded in 1558, it has many famous ex-pupils including Jack Straw and author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, Douglas Adams.
