Braintree has a rich textile history, which much of the town’s prosperity has been based on. Flemish immigrants brought their skills over in the 1600’s and in the 19th century Warner & Courtauld opened a silk factory here. Much of this textile heritage is documented in Braintree’s District Museum. Braintree is also home to the small but stunning St Michael’s Church, located right in the heart of the town centre. With a magnificent 120ft spire and a bell that still chimes it’s original chime, it is believed to have been built in 1199. Probably the best-known former residents of Braintree are members of the famous dance music group, The Prodigy.
