Back in the 1850’s leading industrialist Sir Titus Salt moved his mills and their workforce out of Bradford’s cramped unhealthy conditions to a healthy, rural site near Shipley. Here he built his new alpaca and mohair cloth mill Salt's Mill and the village of Saltaire for his workers. With its neat stone cottages, bathhouses and dining hall it was a far cry from the slums they left behind. There was also a hospital, an Institute for recreation and education, allotments, a park and a boathouse but no pub! Saltaire is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today Salt’s Mill is a gallery that displays the work of Bradford born artist David Hockney.
