The small Welsh town of Blackwood sits on the River Sirhowy. A colliery owner by the name of John Hodder Moggridge founded the town. In 1912, a local resident picked up the distress signal from the Titanic. Artie Moore went on to be involved in the invention of the transistor for telecommunications. Blackwood also has famous musical connections, being the hometown of influential rock band, Manic Street Preachers, who are responsible for such classics as “Everything Must Go”, “La Tristesse Durera” and “Kevin Carter”. All members attended the local school and grew up together; Fidel Castro described the band as “louder than war.”
