Blackpool’s popularity as a seaside resort goes back to the middle of the 18th century when sea bathing to cure diseases became fashionable. The arrival of the railway in the 1840’s meant mill workers could escape city life for a day at the seaside. The Eiffel Tower inspired Blackpool Tower with its famous ballroom and Blackpool’s three piers made it a popular family resort. In the 1870’s it became the first town in the world to have electric street lighting when its Promenade was wired up, a forerunner of its present-day illuminations. Famous residents past and present include Jimmy Clitheroe, Frank Carson and clown Charlie Cairoli.
