The history of this Lancashire cotton town starts in cottages where locally produced wool was woven. The arrival of Flemish weavers in 14th century developed it into a thriving cotton industry. The invention of the ‘spinning jenny’ by local weaver James Hargreaves in 1764 took it out of the cottage and into the factory, though not before jealous locals smashed his upgraded looms. Blackburn soon became the weaving capital of the world. Buildings of note in Blackburn include the gorgeous art deco Waterloo Pavilions and the bowstring arch bridge named after fell walker, Lake District author and local boy Alfred Wainwright.
