Oldbury nestles in an area of the West Midlands known as the Black Country. It’s not known if the name came from the thick surface coal seams found locally or the soot-creating furnaces of the industrial revolution that used this resource. By the mid 19th century Oldbury was renowned for its coal, iron, phosphorus and steel making. No surprise that with a thriving local industry the first branch of Lloyd's Bank opened in Oldbury 1864. Today its industrial past is a distant memory and the canals that shipped its goods in and out are places of leisure. Famous sons of Oldbury include comedian Frank Skinner and Jack Judge, composer of 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary'.
