Belper, on the River Derwent, is a Derbyshire town steeped in mill history. The historic North Mill is one of the oldest surviving examples of an industrialised water-powered cotton mill in the world. Originally built in 1786 by Jedediah Strutt it was destroyed by fire in 1803. His son William replaced it with a multi-storey building incorporating an iron frame and brick arches, to make the building 'fire-proof'. Strutt’s knowledge spread across the water when one of Jedediah’s local apprentices, Samuel Slater, went to America and became the father of the US cotton industry. The Strutt family were great benefactors and the Herbert Strutt Grammar School even educated 007 Timothy Dalton and Sir Alan Bates.
