Kempston means ‘the enclosed settlement on the bend’. This ‘bend’ is thought to have meant the River Great Ouse, known for its sharp bends around Bedford. The river is 150 miles long, making it the 4th longest river in the country, originating from Syresham in Northamptonshire, among other sources. The river is a popular waterway for boaters, attracting canal boats and narrow boats, whilst providing a haven for wildlife including species of swan and birds of prey. The Ouse washes were built as a drainage system for the Great Ouse and have become a site of national importance with nature reserves for the RSPB and WWT Welney.
