This South Yorkshire town’s coat of arms features a coal miner and a glass blower. Though all the mines are now closed, the colliery brass band remains. Glass making continues in Barnsley and the UK’s first bottle bank was opened here in 1977. Local heroes include rock group Saxon and a couple of Arctic Monkeys studied music at Barnsley College. Other famous locals include cricketer and Strictly Come Dancing champion Darren Gough, and miner’s sons Harold " Dickie " Bird, former international cricket umpire and Michael Parkinson. This Barnsley Grammar School boy was an enthusiastic club cricketer, and he and Dickie Bird were once the opening partnership at Barnsley Cricket Club.
