Athlone on the River Shannon is the largest town in central Ireland, with a population of over 19,000. The river forms an historic border between County Roscommon and County Westmeath and Athlone was an important crossing point. Historically, at the heart of Athlone was a castle, but much of it was destroyed during the Siege of Athlone, when Williamite forces led by Godart de Ginkel narrowly won victory over the Jacobites. The three theatres in the town are called The Dean Crowe, The Little Theatre and Passionfruit Theatre. The All-Ireland Drama Festival takes place annually in the town.
