Some Gaelic scholars believe the origin of the name Aberdeen comes from 'Aber' and 'da-aevin' meaning between ‘the mouth of two rivers’ – the Dee and the Don. In 1796 Charles Abercrombie suggested removing the top of the hill and building a huge viaduct over the valley. This ambitious project resulted in a 60-foot wide viaduct – Union Street - completed in 1805 and led to the development of the west side of the city. In more recent times, the discovery of North Sea Oil in 1969 has led to Aberdeen becoming the ‘Energy Capital of Europe’.
