Situated on the River Welland, Spalding is a market town in Lincolnshire famous for its annual Flower Parade that draws visitors from all over the globe. The Romans settled here and produced salt from the local marshlands. The area has now become more famous for its flowers, for bulbs grow well in the rich silty soil. With its grand Georgian terraces lining the river, Spalding is an attractive town and truly 'The Heart of the Fens'. In the centre of the town is the 15th Century Ayscoughfee Hall once home, in 1499, of Sir Nicholas Ailwyn who became a Lord Mayor of London. Nowadays the hall is a museum with many historic curiosities from around the area.
