Shirley district is located in the west of Southampton and has the biggest and most important shopping area in the City. The district features the popular Southampton Common, a Site of Specific Scientific Interest that includes 326 acres of woodland, grasslands, nature trails, wetlands and yachting ponds. It hosts a wide variety of events from fairs to carnivals, races and concerts. It also hosts a Wildlife Centre, built on the former site of Southampton Zoo, which displays a large amount in information about the local wildlife, flora and fauna and educational facilities for the children. If you’re lucky you might even spot the rare Great Crested Newt.
