Located on the banks of the River Nene, Peterborough is known as 'The Gateway to the Fens'. There has been a settlement since the Bronze Age; later the Saxons built an Abbey on the site that is now Peterborough Cathedral, a building known for it's English gothic facade. In 1912, Peterborough astronomer George Alcock received an MBE for exploring the night sky and also had an asteroid named after him. Coming back down to Earth, Andy Bell, the lead singer of pop duo Erasure was also born here. To the south is Holme Fen, the lowest point in England at 9 feet below sea level.
