Set on the English Channel coast, Christchurch has been here since Saxon times when it was one of the most important in England. The Priory Church here also dates back to Saxon times and is the longest running parish church in England. Due to its easy accessibility from the harbour, Christchurch was a favourite haunt of smugglers including the infamous Thomas Tripp whom the local pub is named after. Smuggling was so rife that in 1785 there was a battle, called the 'Battle of Mudeford', between the 'scallywags' and 'HM's Customers and Excise'. On the south side of the harbour is a bank and ditch built to protect a settlement in Neolithic times - around 2000BC!
