Chatham is a large town built on the banks of the River Medway that has grown around the important naval dockyards, established here by Elizabeth I in 1568. In the 1667 'Battle of Chatham' a Dutch fleet sailed up the Medway to launch a successful attack on the large warships docked here. Charles Dickens lived in the town as a child and Medway features in some of his novels. He must have liked it here because in his later years he returned and bought a house in nearby Gad's Hall. Chatham is also apparently the home of the infamous shell suit clad 'chav'.
